JUST A BUNCH OF WAVE SAILORS SAILED IT. BUT FOR SURE NOBODY ELSE SAILED JAWS JUST A COUPLE OF DAYS AFTER HIS FIRST LANDING IN MAUI! WITH ITS CHAMELEON 93, MACIEK RUTKOWSKI SHOWED TO THE WHOLE WINDSURFING WORLD THAT HE HAS BALLS!

HI MACIEK, WE HEARD THAT YOUR FIRST TRIP TO MAUI STARTED WITH A REAL ‘BANG’! WHAT HAPPENED?
Haha i knew it! The moment I booked my ticket to Maui I felt there was gonna be a Jaws swell to greet me. I was praying I would get one at the end of the trip but somehow I felt I’m gonna get one at the beginning. And so it happened! At first it was not sure if we’re gonna be able to sail because of the WSL contest, but the second day of the swell looked really windy, most likely too windy for surfing, so I asked around, found a local water-safety legend Maxi, and payed my months salary for him to take me there on his jet ski and save me if something went wrong. But something went wrong actually the day before! On my very first session in Hawaii I had solid mast-and-a-half waves in an outer reef between Kanaha and Sprecks. On the last wave I broke a mast and had to leave the whole rig to even be able to come back, because I was so far out (it’s a bit more complicated actually, head to my Facebook for the whole long story)! For a moment I thought it was a sign, but then I thought I’m going with one of the best guys and this might be my life’s only opportunity, so fuck it, let’s go!

WHAT DID IMPRESSED YOU MOSTLY SAILING IN PEHAI?
The speed of the wave. Everyone said it’s fast but before you actually try to catch it you don’t understand. It’s like slalom sailing on the first reach in Fuerte but with a wave board and a fucking mountain behind you!! Also the sound is pretty crazy, like a jet engine, but a few meters behind you!

WHICH STUFF WERE YOU SAILING WITH?
Just the normal production Chameleon 93, with a quad setup and a Challenger 4G 4.7 which was good for the first 30 minutes, then away too small!

HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED SAILING IN HO’OKIPA TOO?
Yes, great place!

TALK US ABOUT YOUR FEELING ON YOUR FIRST WAVE IN HO’OKIPA, WITH THAT WONDERFUL BACKGROUND HEADED BY THE HALEAKALA.
Haha, actually it was a closeout and broke my extension and I had to swim full power not to end in the rocks and come out at Lanes! (check my Facebook for the full video). So didn’t really focus on the landscapes haha! But then sailed for the rest of the day and it was really fun. Mast high, but felt tiny after Jaws!!

ARE THERE OTHER MAUI SPOTS WHERE YOU ALREADY SAILED?
Like I mentioned I sailed this outer reef between Kanaha and Sprecks that only breaks when its really big. It was amazing, super easy, glassy, big but friendly waves. Wish someone could film me there!
